Head coach Gus Malzahn and the Auburn Tigers have their work cut out for them this week against the SEC’s top rushing defense in Alabama. The Crimson Tide allow just 69.4 rushing yards per game, first in the conference. The Tigers average 297.8 rushing yards per game, first in the conference. It will be interesting to see how each team fares as they boast strong units on both sides of the ball.
No. 1 Alabama comes into the 2016 Iron Bowl with a death grip on first place in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Crimson Tide have been unstoppable all season, and are a constant at the top of the rankings while all the intrigue happens in spots two through six (or seven, or eight, or nine, or …). Even if No. 13 Auburn can pull off the upset on Saturday, Alabama almost certainly won’t fall out of the top four, but it would at least turn the SEC Championship against Florida into a must-win.
This will be the 81st annual meeting of the SEC rivals, and one of the most important games of the year for the playoff bracket. The top-ranked Crimson Tide can cement their spot in the four-team bracket with a win, and even a loss likely won’t kick them out but instead send them to a must-win in the SEC Championship Game.
Even though Alabama’s offense is firing on all cylinders, the defense is still king for Nick Saban. They’re No. 2 in Defensive S&P+ and scoring defense (11.4 points per game allowed), and first in the nation in total defense, only allowing 3.95 yards per play. They’re the only team in the country allowing less than 4 yards per play. They may give up more big plays than they’ve allowed in years past, but make no mistake, this defense is great.
