The 2016 college football season had a lot of twists and turns, but in the end, it led back to the same place. Clemson and Alabama will meet in the College Football Playoff championship game for the second consecutive year. In last year’s matchup, the Crimson held off the Tigers in a see-saw affair, 45-40. In that game, senior Alabama QB Jake Coker passed for 335 yards and two TDs with no turnovers. That was enough to help offset a tremendous performance by Clemson’s Deshaun Watson, who threw for 405 yards with four TDs and one interception.
There is plenty to say about a rematch—and one with a championship at stake, no less—before the Clemson Tigers collide on Monday with the Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff National Championship. Rest assured that the players and coaches have done most of the talking in the buildup to the game. Given its status as a rematch, much of Clemson’s discourse has centered on revenge. For Alabama, it is focused on the lessons learned after hardly escaping against these same Tigers one year ago. A timely onside kick was perhaps the only thing that prevented a complete role reversal this week.
This year, the network appears to be in better shape. After posting slightly better numbers than 2015 for the semifinals, it enters tonight’s 8 p.m. final with a highly anticipated rematch between last year’s finalists, Alabama and Clemson, who played an entertaining championship in 2016. ESPN will air the game across all of its networks.
