Wisconsin enters the week No. 7 in the College Football Playoff committee rankings. The Badgers need a few things to break right to eventually get in, but they’ve certainly got a shot. To keep one, they’ll need to handle business against a bad Illinois team on Saturday in Madison. That shouldn’t be all that hard.
The Illini have had a few OK moments this year, but they’re a long way from competitiveness under first-year coach Lovie Smith. Their only Big Ten wins came against two of the three worst teams in the league, Rutgers and Michigan State, and they’ve lost soundly against everyone else, other than Purdue. The Illini might be good enough to beat Wisconsin someday, but that day almost certainly hasn’t arrived.
The No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers take on a rebuilding Illinois squad at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday during Homecoming weekend. UW (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten) rides a three-game winning streak and is now the frontrunner for the Big Ten West division, provided it wins its next three regular-season opponents. There’s a lot of hype for the Badgers, especially against an Illini team trying to pick up the pieces from the Tim Beckman era, but the players are trying to stay focused one week at a time.
The Illinois Fighting Illini (3-6) defeated the Michigan State Spartans, 31-27, last week. Jeff George Jr. completed 13-for-29 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns. In rushing, Kendrick Foster ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns in 17 carries while Reggie Corbin added 10 yards in four carries. In receiving, Sam Mays posted 39 yards and a touchdown in four receptions while Zach Grant added 37 yards in three catches. Ainslie Johnson complimented for a yard and a touchdown.
