While these teams entered the year with drastically different expectations, in actuality they have been virtually the same team. Both teams have seen their seasons marred by four-game losing streaks. Both lost in heartbreaking fashion on their home fields to Florida State. NC State leads Miami in offensive and defensive yards per game by less than three and nine yards per game, respectively. Both will look back after the season and think what might have been if a few bounces go different ways. One more so than the other, if the Wolfpack fail to get bowl eligible like the Hurricanes have.
MIAMI (6-4, 3-3 ACC): Despite having to start two reserves on the line against Virginia, the Hurricanes piled up 222 yards on the ground including 125 by team rushing leader leader Mark Walton (885 yards, 5.5 yards per carry, 11 touchdowns). While wide receiver Stacy Coley (47 receptions, 531 yards, eight touchdowns) remains Kaaya’s most frequent target, freshman Ahmmon Richards (34, 732 yards, 21.5 yards per catch) has emerged as his big-play receiver, scoring on a 77-yard play against Virginia. Led by freshman linebacker Shaquille Quarterman, an aggressive defensive line and senior cornerback Corn Elder, the Hurricanes have held eight of their 10 foes below their season scoring average and rank 13th in FBS in scoring defense (19.3) and first in tackles for loss (9.0 per game).
The North Carolina State Wolfpack will try to reach bowl eligibility when they host the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon at Carter-Finley Stadium.
It’s been another up-and-down campaign for Dave Doeren at NC State with the Wolfpack currently sitting at 5-5. NC State suffered narrow losses to top ACC teams like Florida State and Clemson, but also gave Boston College its only conference win of the season. At the very least, the Wolfpack snapped a four-game losing streak last Saturday with a 35-20 win over Syracuse.
