Virginia Tech and Notre Dame have had divergent years. The Hokies (7-3) have gotten pretty good, pretty quickly under first-year coach Justin Fuente, while the Irish have nosedived to 4-6 under Brian Kelly. As a result, they’re playing for different things in the next few weeks. The Irish have to win this week and then beat USC next week just to stave off the embarrassment of missing bowl eligibility. The Hokies will win the ACC Coastal if they handle Virginia at home next weekend, giving themselves a New Year’s Six bowl shot if they win there and in the ACC’s title game.

But all of that’s on a weird pause this week. Notre Dame has nothing to do with the ACC standings, and the Hokies aren’t making a huge bowl game unless they win the conference anyway. Virginia Tech’s playing for pretty close to nothing, and Notre Dame’s just playing not to be embarrassed. Maybe it’ll be interesting, I guess?

At 4-6, Notre Dame needs to win its final two games to gain bowl eligible. For a team that came into the year with College Football Playoff aspirations, fighting for a bowl bid is the last place the Irish expected to be with two weeks to go.

1 – Neither is slow out of the gate: The Irish offense enters Saturday scoring a touchdown on its opening possession in three consecutive contests – and in six of the contests played to date. Moreover, they’ve scored the game’s first touchdown in nine of 10 outings, the exception a 10-3 loss in Raleigh’s residual hurricane winds and rain against North Carolina State.

2 – But the second score seems to set the tone: While Notre Dame has scored the first touchdown in nine out of 10 contests, they’ve nonetheless gone on to lose in five of those nine matchups.

While Notre Dame is looking to find its way to the college football postseason, Virginia Tech is trying to get over last week’s loss to Georgia Tech that could have wrapped up an ACC Coastal title for the Hokies. This week’s outcome won’t affect the ACC Coastal title race, but Virginia Tech would like to carry some positive momentum into its season finale against Virginia that will decide the division.
